NEMA 14-50 or 6-50

We've seen many models that offer both plugs. AFAIK both are certified, however I see that the 14-50 is getting more popular.
Does OpenEVSE implement a specific configuration for when a Neutral cable is added?
In the 6-50, the two hot cables power the AC/DC at 240Vac and the circuit GND is tied to Earth, correct?
In the case of 14-50, everything is the same but what do you do with the Neutral?

The Neutral pin on the 14-50 is unused and not connected to anything.

Question here,

I recently picked up a P50A model, and it has a NEMA 6-50 plug. Would it be worthwhile to change that to the 14-50? Or would an adapter be the right way to go?

Sorry to resurrect this thread. I'm moving to a new place and am bringing my OpenEVSE with me, currently it's got a NEMA 14-50 plug attached to it. The new garage has a NEMA 6-50. If I understand the wiring between the two plugs, I should just be able to use this adapter, correct? Thanks!
