EmonPi is a Raspberry Pi based product that runs EmonCMS. Why not just run EmonCMS on Ubuntu?

I'm trying to run the image of EmonPi 2018 version in a Ubuntu virtual machine and the image presents errors, does this type of implementation only works in raspberry or does it have another way to run in an linux virtual machine?
